Proteases refers to a group of enzymes whose catalytic function is to hydrolyze (breakdown) proteins. They are also called proteolytic enzymes or proteinases. Proteolytic enzymes are very important in digestion as they breakdown the peptide bonds in the protein foods to liberate the amino acids needed by the body balance. Undigested proteins can build up in the body and putrefy. These undigested proteins can lead to many unwanted and serious problems in the body. Persons deficient in protease may also have an alkaline excess, which can lead to a multitude of calcium metabolism issues, such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, gouty arthritis, degenerative disc problems, bone spurs, fibromyalgia and ligament disorders.
