Pools are great fun during the summer, but if you've tested your pool water lately, you know that it's a pain to maintain an ideal chemical balance. What a good thing that a pair of common household ingredients can do wonders for preparing the perfect pool pH!

Have a pHantastic Swim
Every substance has a certain amount of acid in them, which is measured in pH. The more acid a substance has, the lower its pH - so, citric fruits with citric acid have about 2 pH, while baking soda has a much higher pH of 9, and is thus referred to as a base, or alkali. Why is this important? Because certain chemicals need to be into your pool to keep it sanitary, but the pH level needs to stay neutral for those chemicals to work. An unbalanced pH level can also be harmful to swimmers and literally dissolve equipment or the pool itself! Frequent testing can tell you when the water needs some conditioning, but what do you do to keep the balance? Trick question - you're looking at the answer!

Be A pH PhD
Normally, baking soda and citric acid would be considered "ingredients" rather than pool chemicals, so why dump them into your pool instead of a mixing bowl? Because they're NATURAL! If your pH is too high, just add some of the citric acid to your pool to lower it. If the pH is too low, add some baking soda to bring it to a neutral level. It's easy and safe! Chlorine and bromine are great sanitizers, but they're still industrial chemicals that need careful handling. Baking soda and citric acid are safe in your kitchen because they're safe to eat, which means they're perfectly safe for swimmers.
