The open box style (some say originally from Japan, others say it's originally Chinese) provides quick grab and go convenience from any angle. This makes it great for displaying art and photos facing one or two ways, while having things like remote controls and phones quickly accessible from the side. E.G. Imagine placing this beside the sofa in the family room - you have pictures of the kids on one shelf facing forward, but can still reach the remote through the side.
