Their different shapes mean they have different uses:
★ The flat file and rasp are suitable for general deburring and filing work on iron and steel, including filing of sharp corners and internal shoulders
★ The half-round file and rasp, tapered toward the point in width and thickness, are designed for shaping curves and deburring, and filing of large holes and flat surfaces
★ The round file and rasp, slightly tapered towards the point are suitable for the filing of concave surfaces, such as enlarging round holes or cutting a scalloped edge
★ The triangular (or three square) file is designed for the filing of internal angles and flat surfaces and is suitable for smoothing acute angles less than 90 degrees
★ The square file is suitable for smoothing the edges of rectangular holes
