The men and women farm owners who grow and harvest these coffee beans are members of the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union, a democratic and empowered union of farmers whose members have been growing coffee since the early 1930's. The Mzuzu cooperative emphasizes gender equity and supports community improvement projects, including the construction of a hospital with the help of coffee premiums. The cooperative's goal is to improve the quality of life of its member farmers through sustainable farmer organisations by promoting sustainable, production, processing and marketing technologies.
