Named after a mountain in Japan, the Kwanzan cherry tree is native to China, Japan, and Korea. It is a showstopper, known for its glorious flower displays at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. The Kwanzan Cherry produces a profusion of pink, double flowers in April and May. It's double pink flowers means you get twice as many petals and twice as many blooms as found on other trees. The leaves are often reddish-copper as they emerge, turning dark green over the summer and fading to a yellow or bronze in the fall. Moderate to fast growth rate. Plant in moist, rich, fertile, well-drained, acidic soil. Loves full sun. Drought, heat and humidity tolerant once established. Images of mature plants. Tip: Potted dormant perennials can be kept in a well-lit cool/cold area (ie. Garage, shed, even in a protected area outdoors) until ready for spring planting. Do not allow them to completely dry out. In winter, plants will be shipped dormant.
