The vertical Bawu is a very similar instrument to Hulusi (except without drones). It is simple to play, and yet is very expressive for many musical performances.

By using denser materials for the gourd, the resistance to pressure is greater, and hence, one is able to greatly increase the dynamic range of the instrument. Using Black Sandalwood, the Bawu would have reached its peak in dynamic range. Modern bands using Bawu will use this model as its penetrating power is mostly unmatched.
