Bee A Landlord
Beekeeping is a tricky business, but it's now more important than ever to get involved while colonies of honey bees continue to die off from parasites, pesticides, and disease. Without bees to pollinate fruits and vegetables, there is a grave threat to agriculture, but there is something you can do to help: adopt a colony of mason bees! No, they don't pay their rent in honey - mason bees can't produce any, but they also don't sting, so you won't have to reach for an Epi-Pen, either. They're surprisingly easy to take care of, they will pollinate all your plants and garden vegetables for you, and all they need is our Mason Bee Nesting Kit to give them a home.

Bee Helpful
Mason bees earn their keep by pollinating, and they do that better than any other insect around, but their name comes from the mud they use to seal up their nests. They're native to North America and they look very similar to common house flies with a metallic, dark greenish-blue sheen, but you would be very wrong to mistake one for the other. Houseflies are a pest that eats garbage and transmits germs. Mason bees are independent workers without a queen, so unlike their honey bee cousins, masons are very docile and never attack, although they like to nest in groups when possible, so our nest kit is the ideal place for them to start an apartment complex.

Bee Hospitable
Mason bees will form an egg chamber in the deepest part of any hole they can find and seal it with mud, repeating the process until the hole is full of eggs. They can't dig their own holes, so they won't damage wood or other structures around your home, but they do need your help to build their nest. Just fill the bee nesting kit with the provided tubes until it's nice and tight, then install the nest around walls of a south-facing garage, house, or garden shed. As long as there's flowering plants and a muddy patch nearby, the bees will keep reusing the nest season after season.

  • Mason bees are friendly bees! They don’t sting and they never attack – they’re too busy collecting pollen and mud for their nests. Just let them pollinate your garden and leave them… bee. :-)
  • Place the nest someplace near your garden where the bees can get sun in the morning, shelter from rain, and access to a little mud for their home. They’ll take care of the rest.
