Product Review
This fantastic green lettuce, originating in Israel, stays sweet even through the hot conditions of summer. Valued for its crispness and flavor. This lettuce grows well in cool weather, so the first crop can be direct sown when the soil temperature reaches at least 35 degrees F, or as soon as the soil can be worked. If the soil temperature rises above 75 degrees F, the seeds become dormant. Direct sow the seed in rich soil and full sun, spreading them as thinly as possible in rows 1-2' apart; when the seedlings begin to grow, thin them to a distance of 8-12". Succession crops can be grown for fresh lettuce all season in areas with cool summers or warm winters; this is accomplished by planting a new crop every 2 weeks. For companion planting benefits, grow lettuce with onions, cucumbers, or carrots.
- 🥬 Heat-Tolerant Upright Romaine: Jericho Romaine Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) forms tall, sturdy heads with crisp ribs and tender, mildly sweet leaves. Known for its strong heat tolerance compared to many romaine varieties, it grows 18–24 inches tall and delivers reliable harvests in extended spring and early summer conditions.
- 🌞 Full Sun to Partial Shade: Thrives in bright sun but also performs well with light afternoon shade in warmer climates. Ideal for garden beds, raised planters, and succession planting.
- 💧 Consistent Moisture for Crisp Heads: Keep soil evenly moist during germination and head formation. Avoid allowing soil to dry out to maintain tender texture and prevent bitterness.
- 🌱 Direct Sow & Thin for Full Heads: Plant seeds ¼ inch deep in early spring or late summer. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days. Thin seedlings to 8–12 inches apart to encourage proper upright head development.
