When cats smell catnip they may exhibit several behaviors such as rubbing their heads and body on the herb or jump, rolling around, vocalizing and salivating. This response usually lasts for about 10 minutes, after which they will become temporarily "immune" to catnip effects for roughly 30 minutes. It is important to note that response to catnip is hereditary; and about 70 to 80 percent of cats exhibit this behavior in the plant's presence. Some cats have no reaction to catnip or silvervine at all.
