The Storm Glass was developed by the captain of the HMS Beagle, Admiral Robert FitzRoy whilst on his famous 1831-36 circumnavigation voyage with the great naturalist Charles Darwin. Storm glasses are sealed glass tubes containing a supersaturated mixture of chemicals. Under changing weather conditions and temperature, the chemicals produce crystals in strange, fascinating shapes.
