Catnip is a member of the mint family and is a hardy perennial that has a distinctive fragrance that is intensely attractive to most cats. The small, white flowers are attractive to honey bees and wild bees. Grows best in full sunlight and average, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant and deer resistant. The essential oil has mosquito repellent qualities. Catnip seeds can be sown outdoors only during the spring. Soak catnip seed in water overnight prior to sowing. Then sow seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil and lightly cover. Kept at 60°F., germination is staggered, over a period of 14-40 daysIf you're planting seeds directly into your outdoor garden, sow them as soon as any threat of frost has passed. Bury seeds 1/8 of an inch (3.2 mm) beneath the soil and space them at least 15 inches (38.1 cm) apart. Catnip seeds have about a 50% germination rate. They are a tough seed.
