These are a type of onion which sets new bulbs at the top of a stalk, and as the stalks dry out they fall over and the bulbs replant themselves, or "walk" across your garden. Most people will pull the bulbs off and replant in rows, to make weeding and tending the garden easier. In southern climates you may be able to harvest green onion tops as early as February or March.
