Used by herbalists for over 2,000 years, milk thistle (silybum marianum) is native to Southern Europe and Asia and is sometimes used decoratively in gardens. The annual or biennial thorny plant has red-purple flowers with pale green leaves and can grow up to 70 inches in height. Historically it has been thought to protect the liver from harmful substances while encouraging growth of new cells.
