Grow Butterfly Milkweed from fresh Asclepias tuberosa flower seeds. Butterfly Milkweed, also known as "Butterfly Weed" will produce beautiful clusters of orange flowers. The plants themselves grow to a mature height of about 18 to 30 inches tall. The Butterfly Milkweed is known for attracting an array of beneficial insects such as bumblebees, lady bugs, hummingbirds and most importantly the endangered Monarch butterfly. Butterfly Milkweed is grown as a perennial flowering plant which will return each year from it's deeply established root system. Asclepias is very important to the Monarch butterfly as it is categorized as a host plant. The caterpillars will enjoy it's large, tender leaves and adult Monarchs, as well as many other butterflies look to it for it's rich source of nectar. The Butterfly Milkweed can be grown with other varieties such as the Showy Milkweed, Swamp Milkweed & Common Milkweed.

  • Appearance: This bushy perennial features vibrant orange (sometimes yellow or red-orange) flowers in large, flat-topped clusters atop hairy stems, with narrow, lance-shaped green leaves and no milky sap unlike other milkweeds.
  • Height and Growth: It typically grows 1-3 feet tall in upright clumps, forming a low, mounded profile from a deep tuberous root system that makes it drought-tolerant once established.
  • Habitat and Conditions: Native to eastern and southern North America, it thrives in dry to medium, well-drained soils such as sand, loam, or rocky areas, preferring full sun and tolerating poor, dry conditions exceptionally well.
  • Pollinator Benefits: A favorite for butterflies, it serves as a larval host plant for monarch caterpillars and provides abundant nectar for adult butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators.
