Nothing brings in the butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees like Monarda. Beautiful mix of colors from scarlet, crimson, red and pink. Flowers are edible and the mint-scented leaves are used in teas. Bee Balm may be sown from early spring up until 8 weeks before the last frost in the fall. Yearly maintenance includes removal of diseased foliage to prevent the fungus from over wintering and divide the plant every few years. The old center growth should be discarded and replant the new side shoots. Germination usually takes 10 - 30 days at 70 - 75F. Reducing the soil temperature at night aids germination.
