Gaultheria procumbens, or commonly known as Wintergreen, is a low-growing perennial that makes a great creeping ground cover. In the summer, there are small white, bell-shaped blooms that are followed by little red berries that last into winter. The ground cover is low-growing and can spread 24 inches by stolons. In warmer climates it does well in shade or partial shade. In northern, cooler climates is does well in partial shade. It prefers rich, well-drained, acidic soil. It is aromatic and resistant to deer. Wintergreen seed needs a cold treatment before it will germinate. One method for cold stratification is to moisten some peat moss, mix the seed into the moistened moss and seal it in a plastic container or bag. Place the material into the refrigerator for 60 days before sowing the seeds. Check the seeds weekly for germination and to make sure they are still moist. After the cold treatment, start the Wintergreen seed indoors. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space the plants 24 inches apart.
