Eryngium planum, commonly referred to as Sea Holly, makes an excellent cut flower and dries well too. After drying, the flowers keep their blue color and work nicely into dried floral arrangements. Eryngium also is very attractive to bees and butterflies, and they have a long bloom season. Sea Holly likes a position in full sun, and they are perennials that can reach 48 inches in height. These unique flowers also have a tap root that allows them to be fairly drought tolerant. Start the seed indoors in early spring, or directly sow the seed outdoors after danger of frost. Press the seed into the soil and lightly cover with peat moss or garden sand. At temperatures between 60 ? 72F, germination normally occurs within 28 days. Sea Holly will self-sow, but it is not considered invasive.

  • TALL & VERSATILE: Our Silver Blue Eryngium grows to a height of 48 inches, adding vertical interest and making it a standout in any garden. Space plants 18 inches apart for proper growth and air circulation. Suitable for USDA Zones 4 – 8, it grows well in full sun, offering flexible placement in various garden settings.
  • LONG BLOOM SEASON & SUITED FOR CUTTING: Enjoy stunning blue blooms from early summer to late summer. These perennial flowers maintain their vibrant color even when dried, making them a great addition to floral arrangements. Soft when fresh, the blooms harden into long-lasting cut flowers, bringing texture and lasting beauty to both fresh and dried bouquets.
  • WINTER INTEREST: Our Sea Holly plant continues to provide visual appeal even in winter with its spiny foliage and dried flower heads, which retain their color and structure through the colder months. As the blooms fade, they turn into textured accents that stand tall in the garden, enhancing the landscape and adding interest to your garden during the winter.
  • LOW MAINTENANCE: Naturally avoided by deer, our Eryngium is well-suited for gardens where deer browsing is a concern. Once established, it requires minimal attention and offers enduring beauty with little effort. The plant’s tough, spiny leaves and flowers make it less likely to be affected by common garden issues, ensuring a low-maintenance, resilient addition to your garden.
  • EASY TO PLANT: Our Eryngium grows well in well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, or clay-rich soils, as long as the soil is not waterlogged. For healthy results, sow seeds outdoors in early spring after the last frost. Surface-sow seeds, pressing them gently into the soil. Keep the soil moist until germination, which takes about 21–28 days.
