Product Review
Nicotiana alata is commonly known as Flowering Tobacco. It is a showy annual that has a nice scent and works nicely in either containers or in beds. Flowering Tobacco is perfect for a window box where the scent can come indoors and be enjoyed! This variety, Crimson Bedder, has bright red 1 - 2 inch flowers, and the entire plant is covered with blooms all summer long. Nicotiana is attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, and it enjoys a position in full sun to partial shade. Sow the Nicotiana seed indoors 6 - 8 week before the last expected frost. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it, and keep the seed moist until germination. With a temperature range of 70 - 75F, germination is normally within 21 days. Transplant the young plants into the garden after frost danger has passed, and space them 14 inches apart. It will bloom 10 - 12 weeks after starting the seeds. Nicotiana is known to self-sow.
