Nicotiana alata is commonly known as Flowering Tobacco. It is a showy annual that has a nice scent and works nicely in either containers or in beds. This variety has lime green 1 - 2 inch flowers, and the entire plant is covered with blooms all summer long. Nicotiana is attractive to hummingbirds, and it enjoys a position in full sun to partial shade. Sow the Nicotiana seed indoors 6 - 8 week before the last expected frost. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it, and keep the seed moist until germination. With a temperature range of 70 - 75F, germination is normally within 21 days. Transplant the young plants into the garden after frost danger has passed, and space them 14 inches apart. Nicotiana is known to self-sow.

  • Nicotiana is also known as Flowering Tobacco
  • It is grown as an annual plant in USDA Zones 3 - 10
  • This profusely blooming, vigorous plant sets hundreds of blooms which are nearly 2 inches in diameter
  • The foliage of green Nicotiana plants resists disease, so it looks as good in October as it did in May
  • Sow 2 - 3 flower seeds per plant
