A hassle-free perennial with beautiful tangerine-Butterfly Milkweed is a hassle free plant that displays clusters of beautiful tangerine- orange flowers atop tall, hairy stems with narrow, lance like leaves. Enjoy the blooms from Spring to Summer. They are gorgeous as cut flowers. The flowers attract many butterflies and the leaves are a food source for Monarch butterfly larvae. Butterfly Milkweed is a perennial that is native to the Midwest. Butterfly Milkweed is a beautiful, showy plant for a butterfly garden, sunny border or native planting. Asclepias tuberosa grows best in Full Sun. It will grow 18-24" tall with a spread of 12-18". Plant in zones 4 to 8. This heat and drought tolerant plant does well in poor soil. It does not transplant well once established. New growth generally emerges in late spring. Flower pods are used in dried flower arrangements. Can be used to help prevent erosion. Native Butterfly Milkweed is easy to grow in average to dry, well drained soil. Deadhead to promote re-blooming. Mulch in fall to prevent winter heaving. There are no serious insect or disease problems. Crown rot may be a problem if the soil is too moist and poorly drained. It is also susceptible to rust and leaf spot. Be advised that you will receive a live plant, it will just not be actively producing top growth until the weather warms considerably.
