Impressionable heiress Barbara Manning is to lead 'a germ-free life until the age of 21' - an edict in her father's will that she has followed to the maddening point of exactitude. When she inherits a clinic, it would seem that her troubles are over. But they've only just begun, as she is shocked to discover that it's also a front for gangsters.
Beloved Bebe Daniels (1901-1977) made over 200 films during her career, including the original 1931 version of The Maltese Falcon and the 1933 musical classic 42nd Street. She married actor Ben Lyon and relocated to England, where they became extremely popular on radio. Along with their children Richard and Barbara, she and Lyon starred in Life With The Lyons, which ran for years on radio, inspired several films and eventually became a television series.
Handsome Richard Arlen (1899-1976) starred in Wings (1927), the very first film to win the Oscar as Best Picture, as well as the controversial 1932 H.G. Wells adaptation Island of Lost Souls.
William Powell (1892-1984) was one of Hollywood's most popular leading men, starring with Myrna Loy in the long-running series of Thin Man mysteries, earning Oscar nominations as Best Actor for The Thin Man (1934), My Man Godfrey (1936) and Life With Father (1947), and capping off his career as the beloved 'Doc' in Mister Roberts (1955).
Director Gregory La Cava, who began his career as an animator with Walter Lantz, received Oscar nominations for Stage Door (1937) and My Man Godfrey (1936), which reunited him with William Powell. Like Arlen and Powell, he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
