Rue is an evergreen cold hardy perennial herb reaching 1-3 feet at maturity, ideal for short hedges or borders. Fragrant lacy bluish green foliage bears small yellow flowers in summer which attract the Giant Swallowtail Butterfly. The citronella oil in the plant deters cats. Used in ancient herb medicine as a warming herb and an antispasmodic. Rue has limited culinary use due to its strong bitter flavor. CAUTION: Can be toxic when taken internally. Handling the fresh herb can cause skin irritation, and be harmful to pregnant women. Rue is easy to grow, and suitable for dry, sunny, xeriscape areas. Requires little water, and is heat and drought tolerant. Zones 4-9
