The Pink Powder Puff Tree or Rose Cascade is a fast growing member of the large Mimososaceae or Mimosa Family. Like most all the plants of this genus, the pinnate leaves close together like praying hands at night. The prolific pink to white puff ball flowers are very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. It is in heaviest bloom thru the spring to mid fall. The buds resemble small berries. It is an attractive single specimen plant. Being small in stature, with a somewhat horizontal growth habit makes it well suited for urban and small lot use. While it can be mass planted and hedged, there are better choices of the species for that use. The Rose Cascade Pink Powder Puff is frequent favorite choice for bonsai culture, as it's trunk and limbs remain flexible for an extended time and it can be successfully grown and will bloom indoors with the proper set up. Calliandra schultzei is a cold senitive tropical that is recommended outdoors in Zones 9, 10 & 11. In temperate but cooler zones it can be covered and protected from frost.

  • A fast-growing, shrub-like tropical tree, the Pink Powder Puff is a large, spreading plant that remains small in stature. Its somewhat horizontal growth habit makes it well-suited for urban and small lot use, and it is a frequent favorite for bonsai culture due to its flexible trunk and limbs.
  • This plant produces a spectacular show of prolific, pastel pink, puff-ball flowers that are very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. The buds resemble small berries, and the plant is in its heaviest bloom from spring to mid-fall, providing a long-lasting show of color.
  • Care: A very low-maintenance plant that is easy to grow in a full sun to partial shade location. It thrives in a fertile, well-drained soil and requires consistent moisture. Prune after flowering to maintain shape, and feed annually in the spring for the best performance.
  • Indoor Growing: While this plant is a frequent choice for Bonsai culture, we do not recommend indoor growing for inexperienced growers with average indoor conditions. This species requires more space, light, warmer temperatures with a day/night differential, and higher humidity than the average indoor growing space provides.
  • Climate: A tropical plant that is best suited for outdoor growing in USDA Hardiness Zones 9b through 11. It will not tolerate freezing temperatures and should be protected from frost in all zones.
