Elecampane (Inula helenium) is a tall perennial, it is a wonderfully handsome plant with broad green leaves and groups of small frazzled 'sunflowers'. It produces seeds that are enjoyed by finches and linnets amoung many others. It has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb, it is a strong antiseptic and can be used for a lot of chest complaints, coughs and bronchitis. When the roots are dried they become stronger and sweeter.
