Butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa), a striking member of the Milkweed genus, is a critical host plant for the Monarch butterfly. It produces clusters of intense orange blooms mid-summer. It is a long-lived perennial.

Monarch populations are dwindling because Milkweed plants are being destroyed by large agriculture and popular landscaping practices. You can help the Monarch by including this stately plant in your garden.

Butterflyweed seeds germinate in the early-mid summer, sometimes in July. The first year growth has no flowers and is primarily below ground as the plant develops a deep, robust root system. Plants in appropriate soil with proper light may bloom the second year. Third year plants can be impressive with abundant orange blossoms.
