Country of origin: USA Brugmansias, or Angel's Trumpets, as they are commonly called, grow up to make large multi stemed semi-trees that bloom in cycles of large, upside down hanging, trumpet shaped flowers. Â They are easy, very rewarding to grow, and make interesting garden specimen plants, are fragrant at night, and attract hummingbirds, butterflies.
Generally they come in shades of pink, peach, white and yellow, and will bloom a least 2 or 3 times each year.
Painted Lady is hybrid seedling cross from Pink Beauty x Ecuador Pink, developed by Bonnie Vaughn and registered in 2005. It is a tall, upright grower, that will develops into a large tree-like, full, lush bush at 6 -7 feet tall, with large, wide leaves. The large single flowers begin as pure white buds that gradually color to a deep carmine pink and deepen to a bronze, brick, almost red toned pink. The bloom cycles are exceptionally long lasting. The long lived flowers that have a sweet, vanilla scent that lasts until shortly after dawn.
- Brugmansias, or Angels Trumpets, are fast-growing, tropical shrubs with beautiful, trumpet-shaped flowers. They are highly fragrant at night and lend a romantic feel to any garden location. Mature plants will cycle into bloom several times during the warm season and are a nectar source for night pollinators such as Luna moths.
- Painted Lady is a registered Brugmansia hybrid. It is a tall, upright grower, that matures into a large upright bush at 6 -7 feet tall, with large, wide leaves. When fully mature, it flowers in extended, repeating cycles of big,single flowers that begin as white buds that slowly unfurl and gradually transition to deep carmine-coral pink. Flowers are lightly fragrant at night.
- Care: The most suitable planting location for Brugmansia is in dappled afternoon shade, as they need a full spectrum of bright, indirect light for 4 to 6 hours daily to produce flowers. Plant in well-draining soil high in organic content. Provide supplemental irrigation as needed, but avoid overwatering. Prune lightly and often to help with branching. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer annually in the Spring.
- Indoor Growing: Brugmansias are not recommended for growing indoors. They require full sun, high temperatures, and high humidity, which makes them unsuitable for indoor growing environments.
- Climate: Brugmansias are tropical plants. They are recommended for growing outdoors in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, overall vigor, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures, and do not take factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variances into consideration. Individual growing environments can vary from the average.
