Hinoki Cypress (Japanese Cypress) is highly prized among experienced bonsai enthusiasts. This elegant evergreen is a large tree in the wild, up to 120 feet in height. Yet it is easy to keep pruned to a much smaller size. Fan-shaped sprays of dark green foliage, with white, X-shaped markings on the underside. Hinoki Cypress is ideal for the Japanese garden and can be used to great effect in virtually any landscape. Prefers full sun but part shade is okay. The tree can be variable in form -- many outstanding cultivars have been introduced. Each specimen grown from seed is unique. Moderately fast grower, as much as a foot per year. But patience is required, as seeds may be slow to germinate.
