Simon, The Earl of Uppingham: At the age of twenty two I was forcibly engaged to a woman I couldn't stand and faced a life of boredom running my father's estate. I resented her interference and missed my real mother who was kind and would never had stopped me doping what I wanted to. After I came out of the hospital I knew I had to thank her. I was totally unprepared for the effect her beauty and kindness would have on me though.

Charlotte: I didn't want any fuss. All I did was get him to the hospital as quickly as possible. I didn't even stay to see whether he lived or not. He obviously did because a day or two later he turned up to thank me. I must say he was a handsome brute, but I wanted him gone. It was far too dangerous for me to be seen talking to him. I'm just an ordinary girl trying to make her way in a difficult world and I didn't need his thanks.
