SuperFly Bonsai's Imported Japanese Kanuma
Japanese Kanuma is the perfect soil for acid loving plants. The most common plant to utilize Kanuma for bonsai is azaleas. Azaleas along with Camellias, Gardenias and other acid loving Bonsai can be potting into pure kanuma. Kanuma is a very light volcanic rock that can be a pain when watering as it tends to float a little. While watering may be tough with kanuma, your acid loving trees will be much happier. Kanuma can also be used as an additive to bonsai soil to lower the PH.
Is It Dirt?
No. Bonsai trees do not like "dirt" and will in most cases die if left in dirt over long periods of time. This is substrate.
What Is In It?
Kanuma is the soil from the Kanuma region of Japan. Kanuma is mined from the ground then baked and sifted to size. Kanuma is excellent at retaining moisture and also promotes great drainage. Kanuma also allows roots to grow through it which helps create a fibrous root ball.
How Do I Use It?
Repot your bonsai tree in this or a mix of this an other bonsai soil amendments. Be sure your bonsai pot has holes in the bottom covered by bonsai mesh.
Each micro climate may require different amounts of water. On very hot/dry days you may need to water two/three times while around freezing you may need to water just once per month. Push your finger 1" into the soil and feel for moisture. If it is dry, it is time to water.
