SuperFly Bonsai's Imported Japanese Hard Akadama
Akadama is commonly used in bonsai as both a straight soil for several different trees, most commonly japanese maples. Akadama is also mixed into nearly every bonsai soil blend that is made. One of the biggest benefits of Akadama is it's ability to retain moisture while still draining and allowing air to the roots. Akadama will break down over time causing soil compaction and the drainage and airation to reduce over time. You will need to repot your tree when the Akadama reduces in size and prevents proper drainage.
Is It Dirt?
No. Bonsai trees do not like "dirt" and will in most cases die if left in dirt over long periods of time. This is substrate.
What Is In It?
Japanese Hard Akadama - is a clay like component that is excellent at retaining water and it breaks down allowing roots to grown in it's place.
How Do I Use It?
Repot your bonsai tree in this soil or mix it with other bonsai soil ammendments to creat your own soil. Be sure your bonsai pot has holes in the bottom covered by bonsai mesh.
Each micro climate may require different amounts of water. On very hot/dry days you may need to water two/three times while around freezing you may need to water just once per month. Push your finger 1" into the soil and feel for moisture. If it is dry, it is time to water.
