The Calymene trilobite was protected by a hard calcite shell and that is what fossilized. The shell moulted away several times during the creature's lifetime. The Trilobite was one of the first creatures to have eyes. The eyes of the calymene are two small round knobs near the front of the body. Their compound eyes are made up of many small receptors - like a bee's eye. These trilobites are preserved as internal molds within the sandstone formation. Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). The images above represent samples from the actual Lot your Trilobite will be randomly chosen from.
