Purslane (Portulaca oleracea sativa) - Purslane is a succulent, sprawling, annual herb plant that you can see growing in lawns and meadows. Purslane is an upright herb with juicy, succulent oval leaves and mild sweet-sour flavor. Plants will re-grow after cutting. Purslane leaves and stems are great raw in salads. You can steam them or add them to soups, stews, and other vegetable dishes. The leaves of purslane resemble small wedges and, like the stem, are juicy. The tiny black purslane herb seeds are hardly larger than grains of salt. If you look very carefully at the end of summer, you may be able to find them pouring out of tiny capsules smaller than a filling in a tooth.
