Rough Blazing Star is a 2' to 3' tall native perennial most often found in dry soils in prairies, meadows, on roadside banks, and in open woods. Rough Blazing Star does best in full sun, is drought tolerant, and is intolerant of wet soils in winter. The ¾" wide fluffy purple flowers are loosely arranged in a spike on a single rigid stalk. Unlike many other tall Liatris species, Rough Blazing Star flowers mostly all open at the same time. Liatris are widely used in borders, native plant gardens, perennial gardens, wildflower meadows, and grassland restoration projects. This pretty grassland plant attracts hummingbirds and butterflies and is a great pollinator conservation species.
