The Better Boy tomato plant is a derivative hybrid from the Big Boy and the Lemon Boy tomato. Though both of its parent plants are well known, the Better Boy tomato has made its own name in the tomato world, thanks to its good size, great flavor, huge plant yields and its great disease resistance to bacterial infections, fungi and parasites. One Better Boy plant once yielded more than 340 pounds (154 kg) of fruit, earning it a Guinness World Record. Most Better Boy Tomato plants will not yield that much fruit, but they will grow plenty bright red 8-16 ounce fruits. These smooth round tomatoes are succulent and juicy, yet very meaty. They are great fresh sliced on sandwiches and in salads, they are also used in cooking many dishes, or preserved fresh frozen for later use. It is a very popular hybrid tomato that has earned a spot as one of the most popular tomatoes grown in the US. Place plants in a sunny garden location at least 24 inches apart to allow for its large size-it can grow 5-8 feet tall. Tomato plants need a normal well-draining soil with 1-2 inches of water per week. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. Don't water too late in the evening. You want the plants to dry thoroughly before night. Too many problems with fungus start when you continuously water tomatoes late in the evening. Harvest in 75-85 days- from seeding. Expect an abundant harvest
