Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is a critical host plant for the Monarch butterfly. It produces apple-sized clusters of pale pink to purple blooms mid-summer. It is a long-lived perennial. Must be planted in the Fall or Early winter to grow in the spring! Updated Recipe.

Monarch populations are dwindling because Milkweed plants are being destroyed by large agriculture and popular landscaping practices. You can help the Monarch by including this stately plant in your garden.

Milkweed seeds germinate in the spring after overwintering, sometimes quite hesitantly. The first year growth has no flowers and is primarily below ground as the plant develops a deep root system. Plants in appropriate soil and light may bloom the second year. Third year plants can be quite impressive, producing abundant delightfully smelling blooms.

A note about seed balls:
Seed balls protect the seeds from erosion, foraging, and many other factors. This protective property often results in a slower germination cycle. Wildflowers are also highly variable in their germination rates. Please be patient with your seed balls. If you placed them in a suitable location, soil, and climate, when the seeds are ready, they will grow!
