TROPICA® - Sealing Wax Palm (Cyrtostachys renda) - 10 Seeds
Worth knowing: This nice and colourful palm is especially remarkable for its multiple, glowing-red, slim stems. The stalks of this elegant pinnate-palm are as well of glowing red colour. Although very often found in the tropics, the Sealing Wax Palm is rather a rarity within our latitudes as it depends on a Tropical environment.
Origin: The Sealing Wax Palm is native in Malaysia.
Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year. Before sowing, soak the seeds in room-water for 12 hours. Afterwards spread out the seeds on moist seed starting soil or coconut fibre substratum and cover them with seed starting soil 1cm in height. Keep humidity high - do not allow the substratum to dry out during the germination period - and place the cultivation vessel very warm (22 to 28 degrees centigrade). The seeds should germinate after 4 to 8 weeks. Sometimes 2 to 3 months may pass, however.
Place / Light: The palm can be placed in a shady location but it stands full sunlight as well. In order to keep the Sealing Wax Palm as an outdoor plant, a Tropical garden is needed.
Care: Plant the young but already decorative palm in cultivation soil and water sufficiently. A warm-to-hot position and a high humidity are essential for a healthy growth. The Sealing Wax Palm grows quite slowly. During the growing-period the palm should be supplied with palm fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks.
Winter period: Being a typical Tropical palm, the Sealing Wax Palm needs a lot of warmth and high humidity in winter as well. Thus overnight temperatures should not drop below 17 degrees centigrade.
Bonsai Suitability: No
